Bakersfield Edges Giants With Ninth-Inning Run

July 6, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release

Bakersfield's Jacob Kaase singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to score Miguel Velazquez from second base with the winning run lifting the Blaze to a 4-3 victory over the San Jose Giants on Monday evening at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Bakersfield tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh before the winning tally in the ninth. The loss drops San Jose's overall record to 48-34.

Edwin Quirarte (2-6) suffered the loss out of the Giants bullpen after surrendering the ninth-inning run. Quirarte worked two innings of relief with one run and five hits allowed. Starter Eric Stolp left the game in the seventh with a 3-1 lead, but received a no-decision. Stolp pitched 6 1/3 innings yielding three runs (all earned) on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Wendell Fairley (2-for-4, 2 2B) had two of San Jose's five hits to lead the offensive attack. The Giants had the leadoff batter reach base in seven out of the nine innings, but finished just 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position.

With San Jose ahead by a 3-1 margin, Stolp plunked Tommy Mendonca with a pitch to begin the seventh-inning rally. After Andres James struck out, David Paisano hit a sharp ground ball to third base that took a bad hop and bounced off of Drew Biery. The play was ruled a single as Mendonca advanced to third.

Quirarte was then summoned from the bullpen and he promptly allowed an RBI double to Davis Stoneburner before Velazquez grounded out weakly to second base bringing home Paisano with the tying run.

In the top of the eighth, Michael Ambort drew a leadoff walk and stole second base, but was unable to advance any further. Bakersfield loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning on a walk and a pair of singles. Quirarte though pitched out of trouble inducing James to ground into a fielder's choice with the force out coming at home before Paisano lined out to shortstop.

Pinch-hitter Johnny Monell led off the ninth inning with a single, but Blaze reliever Mark Hamburger recovered to strikeout Juan Perez and Ehire Adrianza while Monell was thrown out at second attempting to steal.

In the bottom of the ninth, Velazquez bounced a one-out single into left field before advancing to second on a passed ball. After John Whittleman was intentionally walked, Kaase hit a soft line drive single into shallow center field to easily score Velazquez with the winning run.

Hamburger (2-2) was credited with the victory after tossing a scoreless top of the ninth.

The Giants initially took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning as Perez led off with a triple into the right field corner before scoring on Francisco Peguero's groundout two batters later.

Bakersfield drew even in the bottom of the third against Stolp as consecutive singles from James and Paisano started the frame before Velazquez hit a one-out, bad hop RBI single to shortstop.

San Jose though quickly reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth as Charlie Culberson and Biery drew consecutive walks to begin the inning. After Jose Flores flied out, Fairley hammered a double to the fence in left plating Culberson. Then a wild pitch uncorked by Blaze starting pitcher Wilmer Font scored Biery to make it 3-1.

Stolp worked around a two-out single in the fourth and one walk each in the fifth and sixth innings to keep the Giants ahead before Bakersfield rallied in the seventh.

Monday's loss snapped San Jose's seven-game winning streak versus Bakersfield ... The Giants are still 13-2 in their last 15 games against the Blaze dating back to April 24 ... Bakersfield out-hit San Jose by an 11-5 margin ... A sun delay stopped the game for two minutes at the start of the second inning.

On Deck: The Giants and Blaze play the rubber game of their three-game series on Tuesday evening with first pitch at Sam Lynn Ballpark scheduled for 7:45 PM. Kyle Nicholson (5-5, 5.96 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Bakersfield is expected to counter with Joe Wieland (1-0, 11.12 ERA).
