Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes let a late opportunity slip away, as they fell on Saturday night to the Lake Elsinore Storm, 3-2 at LoanMart Field.

Trailing by a run in the last of the eighth inning, Johan Mieses led off with a double to right-center field. Storm reliever Jose Torres then struck out Joey Curletta on a wild pitch that went to the back-stop. That allowed Mieses to move to third and Curletta to reach first base, still with no outs. The Quakes were unable to take advantage though, as Matt Beaty grounded back to the mound for the first out, with Torres throwing out Curletta at second base. Lake Elsinore then made a pitching change, bringing in Yimmi Brasoban, who struck out Yusniel Diaz and got Michael Ahmed to ground out, ending the threat. Brasoban stayed in the game in the ninth and worked a 1-2-3 frame to notch the save.

The two teams traded runs in the first inning, as a wet field set the tone for a sloppy night. A pair of first-inning errors by the Quakes helped the Storm take a 1-0 lead over starter Grant Holmes.

Rancho countered in the bottom of the inning with a run off Storm starter Martires Arias, as Andrew Toles singled and eventually scored on a Howie Kendrick single, evening the game at 1-1.

The Quakes took their lone lead of the night in the third, as Kendrick singled with one out and scored on a two-out hit by Beaty, putting Rancho up 2-1.

Holmes gave the Quakes five solid innings, but a pair of errors behind reliever Karch Kowalczyk (0-1) gave Lake Elsinore the lead in the sixth. Franmil Reyes' sac fly tied the game at 2-2, while a fielder's choice off the bat of Nick Schulz chased home the go-ahead run, giving the Storm a 3-2 lead. Rancho committed a total of four errors on the night.

Storm reliever Kyle McGrath (1-0) earned the win for the Storm with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Kendrick finished the game with two hits, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in the third game of his rehab assignment.

Sunday's U.S. Bank Little League Clinic has been postponed due to continuous rainfall throughout the weekend and fans are encouraged to attend one of the future clinics. Sunday's regularly-scheduled game between the Quakes and Storm is still scheduled for a 2:05pm start time.

Quakes' starter Tommy Bergjans (0-0) is slated to make his Cal League debut, while Michael Kelly (0-0) will throw for the Storm. Sunday's game is a Kids Eat Free Sunday, sponsored by Sunrun, as all kids in attendance will receive a free Tremor Meal, which includes a free hot dog, soda and chips, thanks to Sunrun. Tickets are available at (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com.
