Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Fresno, CA - Alex De Jesus blasted a first-inning three-run homer and the Quakes never looked back, as Rancho Cucamonga defeated the Fresno Grizzlies by a final of 5-1 on Tuesday night.
Tuesday's series-opener at Chukchansi Park was the first meeting in the history of the two franchises, as the Grizzlies joined the newly-formed Low-A West League in 2021, after being in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League since their inaugural year of 1998.
De Jesus, who starred in Sunday's win over San Jose, set the tone for Rancho, as his seventh of the year gave the Quakes a 3-0 lead in the first against Fresno starter Sam Weatherly (2-4).
Sauryn Lao opened the second inning with a single and later scored on a passed ball to help build a 4-0 advantage.
Quakes' starter Jimmy Lewis enjoyed his best start of the year, as he scattered four hits over 2.2 innings of scoreless work.
Hyun-Il Choi (4-3) inhered the lead and nabbed the win, as he allowed just a single run over 5.1 innings of relief.
Rancho's only other run came on a sac fly off the bat of Eddys Leonard in the seventh, as he scored Edwin Mateo to make it a 5-0 game.
The Grizzlies got their lone run in the seventh, but they rarely threatened against the Rancho pitching staff, which combined for eight strikeouts and just one walk on Tuesday night.
The Quakes (25-23), now two full games up in the South Division, will look for a third straight road win on Wednesday, as they send Kendall Williams (1-0) to the mound against Andrew DiPiazza (1-0) at 6:50pm.
On Tuesday, July 6th, the Quakes return to LoanMart Field for another Temblores Tuesday. Tickets are available at rcquakes.com.
