Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., May 27, 2004) â Entering the ninth inning with a 9-5 lead, the Long Island Ducks seemed like they were on their way to an easy victory tonight. On the contrary. After surrendering four runs in the ninth inning in a thickening fog, the Ducks needed extra innings to complete a 10-9 win over Pennsylvania at Citibank Park. The win gave first-place Long Island a three game sweep of the Road Warriors and a 14-5 record, good for a 4 ½ game lead in the Atlantic League's North Division.
After Pennsylvania's four-run ninth inning, the Ducks went to the tenth tied at nine. Mike Caruso started the winning Ducks rally by leading off the bottom of the tenth with a double down the left field line. Taylor McCormack reached base on a fielder's choice after bunting Caruso over to third, which was followed by an intentional walk of Ryan Owen to load the bases with none out for Kimera Bartee. Bartee immediately delivered, singling up the middle on the first offering by loser Joslin Ramirez (0-2) to bring home Caruso for the winning run.
Matt DeWitt (1-0) was awarded the victory after tossing a scoreless tenth, while starter Matt Beech got the no decision after going five innings and allowing two earned runs on seven hits. Bartee finished the night 3-for-6 with 2 RBI, while East Islip's Andrew Salvo stayed hot at the plate going 4-for-5 with two RBI of his own.
The Ducks go on the road on Friday to begin a three-game weekend series against the Bridgeport Bluefish at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Lefty Bill Pulsipher (2-0, 2.66) gets the start for Long Island and will be opposed by Bridgeport lefty Brian Langen (1-1). The game will be broadcast live at 7:05 p.m. on WLIE Radio (540-AM) with Chris King describing all the action from Bridgeport.
