Newark Bears News Release

Camden, NJ, May 27--The Newark Bears broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the top of the eighth inning to claim the finale of a three-game series against the Camden Riversharks, 7-3, on Thursday night at Campbell's Field.

For the second-straight night, the Newark Bears were able to grab an early 2-0 lead over the Riversharks with two runs in the top of the first inning. Rickey Henderson led off the game with a single and stole second base before scoring on a triple by Jerson Perez. Perez then scored easily on a sacrifice fly by Michael Coleman.

The Riversharks quickly answered back in the home half of the third to take a one-run lead, 3-2. Four of the first five Riversharks batters reached base on a single as Quincy Foster, Kevin Jordan and Stoney Briggs each scored in the opening frame.

From there, both starting pitchers took control of the game. Camden starter Lincoln Mikkelsen retired 11 of the next 12 batters he faced, before Newark scored the tying run with two outs in the top of the fifth inning as Henderson doubled home Jay Laflair to knot the game at three.

The Bears Pat Daneker was just as effective in the middle innings as he retired the next 16 of 19 batters he faced before being lifted with one out in the bottom of the seventh for southpaw Dave Richards.

Henderson led Newark with a 2-for-4 performance.

Richards earned his first win of the season as he recorded two outs in relief of Daneker. Eddy Ramos recorded the last five outs for the save.
