Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., May 26, 2004) â Led by the twin offensive powers of Mike Caruso and Wendell Magee, the Long Island Ducks chased Pennsylvania starter and former Duck Julian "the Witch Doctor" Heredia after just two and one-thirds innings of action on their way to a 9-4 win at Citibank Park tonight. The win gives first place Long Island a record of 13-5, while Pennsylvania drops to 4-13.
The crucial blow was struck in the second inning on a bases clearing double by outfielder Magee to give Long Island an early 5-0 lead. On the night, Magee went 3-for-5 with five RBI, while shortstop Caruso continued his recent hot streak, going 4-for-5 with 2 RBI. In his past three starts, Caruso is 8-for-11 with three extra base hits.
After starter Troy Mattes' start was pushed back due to shoulder soreness, Long Island was forced to use a mix of relievers in the win. Emmanuel Ulloa started the game off by pitching two scoreless innings and was relieved by Kris Kozlowski, who let up three earned runs in four innings of action. Justin Lamber (2-0) was awarded the win after tossing a scoreless seventh, while Matt DeWitt and Bill Simas closed out the win with a scoreless inning of action apiece.
Thursday night at 7:05 p.m., the Ducks go for the three-game sweep of the Road Warriors at Citibank Park. The first 1,500 fans to enter will receive Can Koozies presented by Northwestern Mutual Financial Network/the Kaufman Group. Lefty Matt Beech (2-0) takes the hill for the Ducks and will be opposed by Pennsylvania right-hander Felix Rodriguez (1-1).
