Sioux City, Iowa --- Winnipeg Goldeyes starting pitcher Brad Purcell pitched seven-innings of shut out ball en route to a 2-0 victory over the Sioux City Explorers on Saturday evening at Lewis and Clark Park. Purcell scattered four hits and only allowed one runner past second base in the victory, that coming in the sixth inning. He also struck out six batters in the contest.

The Goldeyes plated the first run of the game in the top half of the second as Pat Scalabrini scored on a RBI double off the bat of Winnipeg first baseman Wes Chamberlain. Chamberlain went 2-for-4 in the game, driving in a pair of runs. He now stands at 995 runs batted in for his career.

Of the four Explorer hits, two came off the bat of right fielder Bobby Brown. Brown however did not have the same luck on the base paths as he was thrown out attempting to steal twice in the game. Center fielder Ryan Ruiz and third baseman Chris Lemonis, making his first-ever start as an Explorer, each had one hit on the night.

Adam Shafer started the game for the X's and absorbed his first loss of the season. In three innings of work, Shafer allowed one run on four hits while striking out one and issuing three walks. In all, three Sioux City's pitchers issued nine free passes on the evening, two of which were intentional.

The Explorers (2-1) and Goldeyes (1-2) will conclude their four-game series tomorrow evening as first pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. It is karokee night at the ballpark, as fans will have a chance to win prizes for their singing abilities in between innings.
