Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL- LHP Anthony Boughner (1-0) made his Schaumburg Flyers (3-0) debut a memorable one as he blanked the Fargo-Moohead RedHawks (0-3) 2-0 in a seven-inning game at Alexian Field Saturday night. The left-hander gave up back-to-back singles in the top of the third inning, but then retired eleven straight RedHawk batters before allowing a single to shallow left field by 1B Jason Fitzgerald in the seventh. Earlier Saturday, the Flyers had beaten Fargo 3-2 in the completion of a rain-suspended seven-inning game held over from Friday.
In Game 2, Boughner came back out to the mound after a 64 minute rain delay that began in the bottom of the first inning. It was the first shutout by a Flyers pitcher since Hank Woodman tossed one on August 15, 2003 at Sioux Falls. The Flyers' 3-0 start is the best in franchise history.
3B Chris Weekly's first hit as a Flyer resulted in the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning. Weekly singled up the middle, driving home RF Ben Van Iderstine. DH T.J. Staton came through with his first hit of 2004 in the bottom half of the sixth. 2B Wandel Campana scored from second after Staton knocked a single to right field, bringing the score to its 2-0 final.
Eric Cole backed up Boughner's pitching with two diving catches from his center field position. Cole robbed 3B Ruben Salazar of a hit in the top of the second and did the same to RF Steve Foley in the fifth, ranging well into left-center field to make the grab.
Starter Ray Clark (0-1) took the loss for Fargo, striking out six batters and walking two in five-plus innings of work.
GAME 1 REPORT
The Flyers and RedHawks completed Friday's suspended game earlier on Saturday night, resuming play in the top of the fourth inning with Schaumburg ahead 1-0. Fargo grabbed a 2-1 lead in their half of the sixth, but an RBI double by CF Eric Cole and an RBI single by RF Ben Van Iderstine put the Flyers ahead going into the seventh and final inning. RHP Dusty Keppen worked a 1-2-3 seventh to pick up his first save. SS Geoff McCallum made a leaping 'snow cone' catch to rob Foley of a hit leading off the inning. RHP J.P. Fauske (1-0) was the winner out of the Flyers bullpen and LHP Rich Gilbert (0-1) was the loser.
NOTES: The probable pitchers for Sunday's game are RHP Dave Therneau for the Flyers and RHP Nick Roberts for Fargo...After the contest, the Flyers will leave for a 15-game road trip starting Monday in Kansas City*Tickets for Sunday's game are available by calling 847-891-2255 or visiting www.flyersbaseball.com*Opening Weekend is presented by SBC*
