Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL- Schaumburg Flyers 3B Chris Weekly hit his first two home runs as a Flyer in his first two at-bats Sunday afternoon as Schaumburg (4-0) defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (0-4) 13-7 at Alexian Field to complete a four-game sweep. This is the first time the Flyers have ever swept a four-game series from Fargo and also the first four-game sweep at home in team history.

Weekly smacked a three-run home run in the bottom of the second to left-center field and then launched a grand slam over the right field wall in the fifth to put the Flyers up 10-5. The seven RBI tied the Flyers team record for RBI in one game, set by Harry Berrios on June 21, 2000 against Fargo. Weekly had a chance to break the record when he singled in the bottom of the eighth with RF Ben Van Iderstine at second, but Van Iderstine was forced to hold up at third after a quick relay throw.

After Weekly's first home run, LF Ed Romprey knocked a solo shot out to left-center field for his first hit in a Schaumburg uniform. That was the first time the Flyers have hit back-to-back home runs since Matt Nokes and Joe Pomierski went deep at Sioux Falls on June 1, 2001.

Van Iderstine and CF Eric Cole both extended their season-opening hitting streaks to four games this afternoon. Cole went 2-5 with an RBI. Van Iderstine had his second multi-hit game of 2004, hitting two singles and a double with two RBI. Starter Dave Therneau (1-0) got the win after working five innings and allowing nine hits, five runs (four earned), and striking out seven batters.

The RedHawks scored three in the first inning, then added lone runs in the third, fifth, seventh and eighth innings. LF Corey Paul hit a solo home run to left field in the fifth, just after the bases were cleared by a 6-4-3 double play. Former Flyer Steve Foley had five singles with 3 RBI and a run scored for the RedHawks. 1B Jason Fitzgerald added a pair of singles and a pair of doubles with three runs scored. RedHawks starter Nick Roberts (0-1) got the loss after allowing ten hits and ten earned runs. He left the game after Weekly's grand slam in the fifth inning.
