Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Several Oklahoma amputees will get new prosthetic limbs thanks to funds raised by the Limbs for Life Foundation during this year's Bricktown Blaze.
The Sixth Annual Bricktown Blaze 5k Run and One-Mile Fun Walk will be held at 5:30 p.m. May 10 in the Bricktown district of Oklahoma City. It is run in conjunction with the Oklahoma RedHawks and will end on the field of AT&T Bricktown Ballpark prior to that night's RedHawks game.
All proceeds from the race will help Limbs for Life buy prosthetic limbs for amputees in Oklahoma. Last year, over 500 runners raised enough money to help 12 amputees. Limbs for Life helps amputees around the world. However, funds from the Blaze are specifically ear-marked for use in Oklahoma.
"We have had a tremendous response to the Bricktown Blaze and Limbs for Life," said Craig Gavras, Limbs for Life's executive director. "The RedHawks have helped make this event a success and make a positive impact on so many lives."
For the sixth consecutive year, runners and volunteers will receive a free ticket to the RedHawks game following the race. The free baseball ticket and opportunity to finish on the field of the ballpark set the Bricktown Blaze apart. John Allgood, the RedHawks' executive director, said the organization is proud to partner with the event and make it unique.
"The RedHawks are honored to be associated with Limbs for Life and the Bricktown Blaze," Allgood said. "We have seen the event grow exponentially in a short period of time and help a lot of amputees."
Registration for the Bricktown Blaze is $20 in advance, $25 the day of the race and $15 for groups of 25 or more. Amputees run or walk for free. To register or volunteer for the event, please go to limbsforlife.org. Media members wishing to participate in the race should contact Ryan McGhee by phone or E-mail.
Limbs for Life is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It was co-founded in 1995 by Craig Gavras, who after losing a limb realized the need to help less-fortunate amputees. The foundation provides financial assistance to hundreds of amputees a year in the United States. It also collects used limbs for distribution in developing countries such as the Dominican Republic, Turkey and countries in Africa. For more information, visit our Web site at limbsforlife.org.
