Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Round Rock, TX - Wilkin Castillo's base hit in the top of the 13th inning scored Emilio Bonifacio to give the Sidewinders a 5-4 win over the Round Rock Express on Monday night at the Dell Diamond. The win is Tucson's third in a row and just their second road victory of the season.
Bonifacio opened the 13th with an infield single as he beat out a slow bouncer to third. Tim Raines, Jr. sacrificed Bonifacio to second and Phil Avlas' ground out moved him to third. Josh Whitesell was intentionally walked but Castillo caused that move to backfire when he lined the first pitch he saw from Carlos Hines into right field for a RBI single.
Jailen Peguero worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the 13th with two strikeouts to earn his second save of the season. Connor Robertson pitched shutout ball on one hit in the 10th, 11th and 12th to earn his fourth win.
After falling behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first, the Sidewinders were handed single runs in the second and third to tie the game. Humberto Quintero's passed ball allowed Whitesell to score in the second and Reggie Abercrombie's error brought Trent Oeltjen home in the third.
Esmerling Vasquez was wild in his first Triple-A outing. Vasquez, the Diamondbacks minor league pitcher of the year in 2007, worked just three innings and allowed two runs on two hits. He walked two and hit four batters.
Round Rock scored twice against Abe Woody in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead but the Sidewinders came right back with two in the fifth to tie it. Bonifacio had a sacrifice fly and Raines doubled to left to bring the game even at four.
The Sidewinders and Express play game two of their series on Tuesday night at the Dell Diamond. Right-hander Billy Buckner (0-2, 9.67) starts for Tucson against right-hander Runelvys Hernandez (0-2, 11.37) for Round Rock. First pitch is at 5:05 Tucson time. The game will air LIVE on COOL 1450 beginning at 4:55.
