Pringle gets called to the Hall

April 2, 2008 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Edmonton Elks News Release

(Edmonton) Mike Pringle, the CFL's all-time leading rusher and former Edmonton Eskimo, has been named to the Canadian Football of Fame.

During his brilliant 15 year career in Canada, Pringle established or tied nearly every record for a running back in the CFL. Twice named the league's Most Outstanding Player (1995 & '98) and a seven time CFL All-Star, Pringle played briefly with Edmonton in 1992 before moving on to Sacramento and then Baltimore, where in 1994, he ran for 1,972 yards and 13 touchdowns. The next season Pringle would help lead the Stallions to become the first and only American franchise to ever win the Grey Cup.

But it was as a Montreal Alouette that Pringle would solidify his reputation as a player capable of single handedly dominating a game. In 1998, the Cal-State Fullerton product ran for a remarkable 2,065 yards, a feat never repeated in the CFL.

Pringle's time as an Alouette came to an end following the 2002 season and he signed as a free agent with Edmonton where he was instrumental in the Esks' 2003 Grey Cup title. Pringle's greatest triumph as a player came during his time as an Eskimo when, on September 18, 2004, he broke the legendary George Reed's career rushing mark of 16, 116 yards. Pringle announced his retirement after the '04 season. He finished with 16,425 career rushing yards and 20,254 yards from scrimmage - both CFL records and 137 career touchdowns.

Eskimo Head Coach and Director of Football Operations Danny Maciocia, who coached Pringle in both Montreal and Edmonton, says " Mike possessed a burning desire to win every time he stepped on the field and was a relentless competitor who demanded the best of himself, his teammates and his coaches. He is without question one of the most dominant players - at any position - in the history of the CFL".

Pringle is the 33rd former Edmonton Eskimo to be inducted into either the player or builder categories of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. He will be officially inducted September 18 - 20, along with John Bonk, Doug Flutie, Michael Clemons and former Saskatchewan Roughrider executive Tom Shepherd.
