Flutie's Leo roots pave way to Hall of Fame
April 2, 2008 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
B.C. Lions News Release
(Vancouver) Four players and one builder were named today to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame class of 2008. Among them was Doug Flutie the one-time Lion who broke into the CFL in 1990 after a five-year career in the USFL and the NFL.
Flutie combined a strong throwing arm with the skills of a running back and redefined the quarterback position. Known for his leadership and winning attitude, he led the Lions to a winning record in the latter half of the 1990 season after taking over as the starter partway through the campaign. Flutie led the club with 662 yards rushing and 2,960 yards passing that season.
The 1991 season would be a magical one for Flutie and the Lions as many of the club and league records he set that season remain untouched 17 years later, including his 6,619 passing yards and 38 TD passes. He also ran for another 610 yards and scored 14 TDs of his own in leading BC to a CFL record 9,117 yards of total offence (506.5 yards per game). Flutie became the only player to lead the Lions in both rushing and passing yards in the same season.
For his efforts, Doug was named as the CFL's Most Outstanding Player for 1991 leading the Lions to an 11-7 record and a tie for second place in the West. The high-flying Leos also shattered their previous scoring record piling up 661 points and drew almost 41,000 fans per game that season.
Flutie still ranks sixth on the Lions' all-time passing list with 9,579 yards while playing in just 34 games before moving on to Calgary and Toronto. He would end his career with 41,355 career passing yards, 270 touchdowns and six CFL Most Outstanding Player awards (1991-1994, 1996 and 1997)
Flutie will join John Bonk, Michael 'Pinball' Clemons, Mike Pringle and Tom Shepherd for Hall of Fame induction ceremonies slated to take place in Hamilton, Ontario from September 18th - 20th, 2008
