COLUMBIA, SC - The Pee Dee Pride's team-record losing streak was extended to seven games on Saturday as the Columbia Inferno defeated the Pride 4-1 at the Carolina Coliseum.
The loss was the Pride's sixth straight on the road, which ties a team record.
Despite several quality scoring chances in the first period, and outshooting Columbia 12-9, the Pride were unable to get any pucks past Inferno netminder Mike Minard as the game was scoreless through 20 minutes.
Columbia finally broke the scoreless tie at the 13:48 mark of the second period, scoring on a two-man advantage. Bryson Busniuk's pass settled on the stick of Brad Ralph in the left-wing circle and Ralph was able to wrist a shot past Sebastien Laplante for his 16th goal of the season.
The Inferno doubled their lead with another power-play tally with just 1:48 remaining in the second period. Ryan Campbell, stationed in front of the Pride net, was able to get his stick on the puck and redirect it past Laplante for his eighth tally of the season.
Pee Dee got on the scoreboard with a power-play tally of its own 3:49 into the third period. Jake Wiegand was able to split two Columbia defenders just inside the blue line, and he fed a perfect cross-ice pass to Darryl Green, who was able to slide a shot past Mindard for his fifth tally of the season.
The Inferno took a 3-1 lead with 2:37 left in the third. The Pride had pressure in the Inferno zone, but Columbia was able to clear the puck, and John Longo got behind the Pride defense and was able to beat Laplante for his sixth goal of the season.
Columbia added a shorthanded, empty-net tally with 11.9 seconds left to set the final.
Tuesday, the Pride travel to the North Charleston Coliseum to take on the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:00 p.m. Catch all of the action on WDAR Sunny 105.5 and www.peedeepride.com starting with the Palmetto Chiropractic Pre-Game Show at 6:40.
