Flint Firebirds News Release

Flint, Mich. - The Firebirds will play a home-and-home series with the Spitfires beginning Friday night in Flint, before heading to Windsor for a Saturday night tilt. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. (ET) at the Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center.

Friday marks the first time that Firebirds' Eric Wellwood will face the Windsor Spitfires as a Head Coach in the OHL. Wellwood is a native of Windsor and played for the Spitfires from 2007-10, winning back-to-back Memorial Cup Championships in 2009 & 2010. Wellwood later went on to be drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers and recorded 10 points in 31 NHL games before sustaining a career ending injury.

Friday is the first of six games between the Firebirds and the Spitfires this season and the first of three on home-ice in Flint. Last season, the Firebirds posted a 2-4-0-0 record against the Spitfires. All-time, Flint holds an overall record of 5-12-1-0. On home ice, the Firebirds trail the Spits' 3-6-0-0 in the series.

Most recently, Flint was unable to knock off the Kitchener Rangers Wednesday night. Jake Durham scored his team-leading 12th and 13th goals of the season in a 7-2 defeat to Kitchener. The Spitfires were in Sault Ste. Marie Sunday where the Greyhounds recorded a 6-5 overtime victory over the Spitfires. Windsor had five different goal scorers in the contest.

On special teams, the Firebirds have scored at least one power-play goal in eight of their last 12 contests. The Firebirds have climbed to 18th in the OHL on the man-advantage, scoring 13.3% of the time. The Spitfires have the league's 15th-best power play, capitalizing on 16.9% of their opportunities. Windsor is killing penalties at a rate of 86.0%, which is second-best in the OHL. Flint's penalty kill continues to improve as they are now shutting down the opposition's power play at a 63.7% clip.
