Knights Outlast Attack in a Penalty Filled Affair

A loud and energetic barn full of 9,036 hockey fans is where the Attack found themselves tonight, as they were in London to take on the Midwest Division leading Knights. The Knights were riding a 10 game win streak heading into the game, and Owen Sound was looking to remind them that all good things must come to an end.

There was a fury of shots in the first few minutes of play, but nothing to show for it. London thought they scored nearly 2 minutes in, but Guzda reached back to save the day.

Daylon Groulx was sent to the box early on for slashing, but the Attack were able to fend off an offensive push from the Knights.

The Attack got their first powerplay opportunity with just over 5 minutes to play in the 1st, however could not capitalize, and the score remained 0-0.

Groulx got called for unsportsmanlike conduct late in 1st but Dunkley of the Knights got called for hooking, so we headed to 4-on-4 play. Nothing was accomplished with the extra ice. Shortly after, Maksim Sushko got sent to the box with 13 seconds to go, getting called for hooking.

A handful of penalties for each team in the 2nd period was spoiled by a 4-on-4 goal by London defenceman Adam Boqvist with 6 minutes to go in the period. A few penalties later the Knights scored a shorthanded goal, compliments of Alec Regula, with Liam Foudy drawing the assist on the play.

With just 12 seconds to go in the period, Carter Robertson and Connor McMichael decided they didn't like each other all that much, and both received 5 minutes for fighting.

The score sat 2-0 London as the buzzer sounded to end the 2nd period. Shots on goal at the end of 2, presented by Mark McDade, were 12 for the Attack and 9 for the Knights, bringing the total on the night to 25-22 Owen Sound.

The 3rd period brought even more fireworks, as just over a minute in, Adam Boqvist scored his 2nd goal of the night, as the Attack were trying to kill off a 5-on-3 powerplay. Two of their steady penalty killers, Markus Phillips and Trent Bourque were in the box, which didn't help the Attack's odds. 3-0 London.

A few minutes later Billy Moskal scored to make it 4-0 London. The Bears bounced back however, as Kevin Hancock scored to get his league leading 44th point. Nick Suzuki and Carter Robertson picked up the two assists on the play.

With 7 minutes to go, Alex Formenton came flying into the Owen Sound zone and fed Liam Foudy, who cashed in and expanded the lead to 5-1. Alex Turko scored a couple minutes later to make it 6-1 London.

Zach Roberts answered back just 30 seconds later, scoring a nice goal with rookies Nolan Seed and Manuel Alberg getting the assists on the play.

Carter Robertson then became the 2nd Attack defenceman to get ejected, after Igor Chibrikov. Robertson finished the night with a strong performance in the loss, putting up an assist and 9 penalty minutes.

With just over a minute to play, Connor McMichael scored to get the Knights 7th goal, and that's how the game would end.

7-2 was the final, with the two teams scoring all 9 goals in the last 30 minutes of play. The two teams racked up a combined 55 penalty minutes in very a physical contest.

Mark McDade shots at the conclusion of the game were 38-35 in favour of London.

Nick Suzuki was awarded the Hatten Home Hardware Hardest Working Player of The Game Award, as voted upon by the fans. Suzuki had 1 assist on the night, but played a strong game and was key to the Attack penalty kill.

The 1st star of the night was Liam Foudy with 1 goal and 2 assists. Adam Boqvist got 2nd star with his 2 goals on the night, and Knights' netminder Jordan Kooy stayed hot, receiving 3rd star for his 33 save performance.

The Attack will be looking to bounce back tomorrow night at home, as they take on conference rival Sault Ste. Marie, with 2 important points on the line. Tomorrow also marks the Special Olympics Ontario game, be sure to come out and support a great cause!
