Pregame Primer: Saints Travel to Green Bay to Take on Gamblers out of Break
December 27, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
After an 11-day break, the Fighting Saints are back at it tonight and back on the road against the Green Bay Gamblers. This will be game 27 on the season for Dubuque and it will be the 18th on the road for the Fighting Saints. Dubuque is playing solid hockey coming in to the game and before the break, were 4-1-3 in their last eight games.
-The Fighting Saints have recorded points in five straight and seven of eight in their last three weeks of play. Dubuque finished their first group of games with two overtime losses and a defensive clinic in a 2-1 victory over the Sioux City Musketeers. The lone regulation loss in the past eight came against the Muskegon Lumberjacks.
-Matias Maccelli is tied for the USHL's longest point streak this season as he currently has points in 14-straight. Maccelli has five straight two point games and his point streak is the second longest for Dubuque since the Fighting Saints returned in 2010-11. Zach Solow had points in 20 straight back in 2016-17.
-James Sanchez also has a lengthy point streak, the second longest in the USHL this season in fact. With an assist in Dubuque's final game before break, Sanchez pushed his point streak to 12 games. Both Maccelli and Sanchez started their streaks on November 3rd, however Sanchez missed two games due to suspension.
-Dubuque has 12 games in the next month and two days as the season starts to hit full force moving into January and February. Of the 12 games, six are at home and six are on the road. 21 of Dubuque's final 36 games are at home.
-Speaking of home, even when Dubuque isn't playing at Mystique Community Ice Center, the team will still be close by. The Fighting Saints won't have a road trip of more than three and a half hours the rest of the season.
-Special teams, notably the power play have started to make a difference for the Fighting Saints. Heading in to Thursday's action, Dubuque has the third best power play in the league at 23.6%. They are a minuscule 0.3% behind the Youngstown Phantoms for tops in the East.
-The Fighting Saints have 10 power play goals in their last eight games (the team is 4-1-3 in those games). Save for a poor showing a man down against the Sioux Falls Stampede on December 13th, the Fighting Saints have allowed one power play goal in 23 attempts. Even if you include that game, they have allowed five in 28 attempts, good for an 83% PK.
-Last time Dubuque and Green Bay squared off the Fighting Saints beat the Gamblers 7-1 on Teddy Bear Toss night. Dubuque is 1-2 against Green Bay this year but has outscored them 9-5 in the three games.
