Charleston RiverDogs News Release

(Charleston, SC)- In minor league baseball, there is a four-letter word you shouldn't utter under any circumstances. It is a word that causes front office staff members to cower, fans to stay home and General Managers to come to tears. It is a word that can ruin a night, a homestand, even a season. The word is RAIN.

It may sound innocent enough, a few drops here, a sprinkle there. But delays, suspensions and postponements are no laughing matter in minor league baseball. It is a subject to be avoided at all costs.

On Wednesday, June 16, the Charleston RiverDogs will confront this demon known as precipitation on "Pray for Rain Night" at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

If it rains ½ inch in Charleston between 7 and 9 p.m., the RiverDogs will reward all fans in attendance with a much friendlier four-letter word: CASH.

RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols has purchased $30,000 of rain insurance for the Wednesday night game at 7:05 p.m. against the Savannah Sand Gnats. If the insurance pays off, meaning if it rains ½ inch in the two-hour window, Echols will divide the money amongst all fans in attendance.

"In our business, the last thing we want is rain," Echols said. "If it rains Wednesday, at least our fans win."

Every fan who enters the ballpark can register to win the $30,000, and only those who register will be eligible to receive any of the insurance money. The official reading will be taken at Charleston International Airport.

In the spirit of the evening, Live 5 News will be at Riley Park advising fans on hurricane preparedness.

Tickets for Wednesday's game and all other RiverDogs home games, including the 45th Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game, June 29 at Riley Park, are available in person at the Riley Park Box Office, by phone at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) and online at etix.com and riverdogs.com.
