Charleston RiverDogs News Release

Charleston, SC- Savannah starting pitcher Clint Everts allowed just two hits in six innings and the Sand Gnats put a dent in the RiverDogs playoff hopes, defeating Charleston 4-1 Tuesday in front of 2,962 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The RiverDogs (38-26) loss, coupled with Capital City's blowout victory at Greensboro, places Charleston 1 ½ games behind the Bombers in the Southern Division standings. The Bombers first half magic number sits at four with five games remaining.

The fifth overall selection in the 2002 June Draft, Everts (4-2) struck out a career-high ten RiverDogs, and nearly threw six innings of no hit ball en route to the victory. In three starts against Charleston this season, Everts has given up just one earned run in 19 innings. Savannah (26-39) scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third inning. Jason Conlisk reached on an infield single. A throwing error by Elliot Johnson placed runners at second and third. Jerry Owens' RBI infield single scored Conlisk, and Reggie Fitzpatrick later scored on a groundout to give the Sand Gnats a 2-0 lead.

An RBI single by Luis Apodaca in the top of the fourth inning gave the Sand Gnats a 3-0 lead. Owens would score on an RBI groundout by Kory Casto in the top of the fifth to increase the lead to 4-0.

Charleston registered its only two hits of the evening and scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Elliot Johnson broke up Everts no-hit bid with a two-out single. Johnson proceeded to steal second, and score on Jason Pridie's RBI base hit.

Strong relief work by Devin Perrin and Thomas Mitchell, combining to give up one hit in three shutout innings, closed the door on the RiverDogs. Mitchell earned the save as Charleston managed a season-low three hits in the game.

Jerry Owens and Rogearvin Bernadina each had three hits for the Sand Gnats.

Game two of the series is Wednesday at Riley Park. Right-handed pitcher Brian Bulger (6-1) will make his fourth attempt at passing Omar Olivares to become Charleston's all-time career leader in victories. Armando Galarraga (2-3) makes the start for Savannah. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Pray for Rain Night.

If it rains ½ inch between 7 and 9 p.m. in Charleston, fans present can split $30,000 worth of rain insurance that the RiverDogs have purchased.

Tickets for all RiverDogs home games and the 45th Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game, June 29 at Riley Park, are available in person at the Riley Park Box Office, by phone at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) and online at etix.com and riverdogs.com.
