Power surge can't push Kernels past Dayton
May 11, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Kernels belted two more home runs on Wednesday night as their recent power surge at the plate continued, however it wasn't enough to earn a victory as Dayton managed a 6-4 win in front of 8,024 fans at a rain-soaked Fifth Third Field.
Warner Madrigal homered for the second consecutive day and Dallas Morris also went deep for the Kernels, who continued to tread water near the .500 mark as their record fell to 16-17. Dayton improved to 17-16. The Kernels have hit six home runs in the last three games but have won just one contest in Dayton.
Morris' blast came with two outs in the first inning and spotted starter Kelly Shearer (1- 3) a brief lead. An RBI double by B. J. Szymanski in the bottom half of the frame quickly erased the deficit.
Cedar Rapids grabbed another brief lead in the second when Brett Martinez drew a twoout walk off Dayton starter Travis Wood. The left-handed Wood then served up a two-run bomb to dead center off the bat of Madrigal. Once again the Dragons wiped out the runs with three of their own in the bottom half.
Trailing 4-3 in the sixth, the Kernels greeted Dragons reliever Wayne Lundgren (2-1) by tying the game thanks to some timely hitting by Flint Wipke. The Kernels designated hitter collected his only hit of the night with a two-out single to keep the inning alive. After Wipke moved to second on a passed ball, an error allowed him to knot the game up. Wipke's hit extended his season-best hitting streak to 10 games.
The Dragons would eventually make a winner of Lundgren when Szymanski lined a twoout offering from Kernels reliever Tim Mattison into center to plate Paul Janish with what would prove to be the game winner. Mattison had just come into the game on the heels of back-to-back two-out walks by Shearer.
A throwing error by Marco Albano in the eighth accounted for Dayton's final score of the night.
