Power Play Propels Portland to 5-2 Win Over Pats

The Portland Winterhawks (15-8-1-1) scored four power play goals Tuesday as they earned a 5-2 win over the Regina Pats (12-9-1-1) at the Rose Garden in front of 4,451 fans.

The Hawks scored three goals in the third period and outshot Regina 21-8 in the frame to break a 2-2 tie and earn the victory, the team's fifth straight home win.

After a scoreless first period, it was the Pats who opened the scoring 3:46 into the second when Chandler Stevenson scored his ninth goal of the season. The Hawks got that one back later in the period at the 13:23 mark on a power play when Taylor Leier, who was in front of the Regina net screening Pats netminder Adam Beukeboom, tipped in a Charles Wells shot to tie the game at 1-1, a score which would remain through the end of the period.

The Hawks took their first lead of the game at the 7:36 mark of the third with another power play goal when defenseman Joe Morrow fired a shot into the top corner past Beukeboom to give Portland a 2-1 lead.

The Pats evened the game at 2-2 at the 11:14 mark on a shorthanded goal by Lane Scheidl, but just 1:08 later, Ty Rattie scored a highlight-reel goal to put the Hawks back on top. Rattie took a stretch pass from Morrow, split two Regina defenders, got knocked to his knees but still got the puck high over Beukeboom's shoulder to regain the lead for the Hawks.

Then just 2:29 later, Sven Bartschi collected the puck at the side of Regina's net and flipped a backhand top shelf to give Portland a 4-2 lead. The Hawks added their fourth power play goal of the game at the 18:29 mark on a goal by Brad Ross to take a 5-2 lead that would stand as the final.

The power play was dominant throughout out the night, with a season-high four goals on 10 attempts, while killing all four Regina power plays.

The Hawks travel to Kennewick, WA, to take on the Tri-City Americans tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The Hawks then return home to host the Spokane Chiefs in the Burgerville Daylight Classic Friday at 3 p.m. The curtains in Veterans Memorial Coliseum will be open for the game, allowing the sun into the arena bowl.
