Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. -- Playing without four regulars and having to play their fourth game in five nights turned out to be too much for the Brandon Wheat Kings Tuesday night as they kicked off a 2-game home stand with a 6-3 loss to the visiting Calgary Hitmen.

The Hitmen jumped on the Wheat Kings for three goals on 20 first period shots and never looked back as Brandon lost in regulation for the first time in seven home games. The Wheat Kings' record also slipped to 16-8-1-1 on the season.

The setback, coupled with Saskatoon's 4-3 Overtime Shootout victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers, leaves the Wheat Kings three points back of the first place Blades in the WHL's Eastern Division.

Alex Gogolev led the Hitmen with two goals while singles came off the sticks of Cody Sylvester, Alex Roach, Jimmy Bubnick and Victor Rask.

Alessio Bertaggia had a goal and an assist in a losing cause for the Wheat Kings, who were playing without Dominick Favreau, Dakota Conroy, Ryley Miller and Ryan Pulock. For Bertaggia, the goal extended his goal scoring streak to four games.

Rounding out the scoring for the Wheat Kings were veterans Darian Dziurzynski and Mark Stone, who ran his league leading goal scoring streak to seven games. The 19-year old Winnipeg product has scored at least a point in 25 of 26 games this season.

The Wheat Kings, who were outshot 41-26 in the game, will now have a couple of days off before returning to the ice on Friday night against Moose Jaw.

Tickets to Friday's game can be purchased at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
