Power Play Goals Fell Blaze in Missouri

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Bloomington Blaze, fueled by Mid-Illini Credit Union, surrendered two power play goals including one on a five-minute advantage and lost 3-2 to the Missouri Mavericks on Friday at Independence Events Center.

The Mavericks opened the scoring with a power play goal with 11:28 left in the first period when Colt King redirected a drive from outside the right post on assists by Sebastien Thinel and Brandon Smith. Travis Granbois evened the game at 1-1 with 3:21 remaining in the first chapter when he ran from the right wing and jabbed the puck just inside the right post with a helper given to Brett Lutes.

Missouri took advantage of a failed clearance as David Simoes wristed a tally from the slot with 17:06 remaining in the second period on assists from Smith and Blake Forsyth to take a 2-1 lead.

The Mavericks were handed a five-minute power play when Blaze forward Brett Lutes was handed a major and game misconduct for boarding, and scored on a Riley Emmerson deflection of a Thinel drive with 11:44 remaining in the third period. The Blaze used a 4-on-3 power play to cut the deficit to 3-2 on a Steve Makway wrister on assists from Kyle Bochek and Jon Booras with 7:42 left. The Blaze emptied the net for an extra attacker for the final minute but could not find the tying goal.

Each team was given six power plays, but the Blaze only converted once while the Mavericks scored twice. Pier-Olivier Pelletier took the loss in net with 26 saves while Mike Clemente earned the win with 31 stops.

The Blaze return home Saturday for the first of four straight games against the Rapid City Rush. The first 1,500 fans to attend Saturday's game receive a Blaze cap courtesy of Carpets Plus Color Tile. The Blaze then return to action at home on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. against the Rush in a game that was originally scheduled for Sunday but moved due to concerts by country artist Luke Bryan. Tickets dated February 17 may be used for the Wednesday, February 20 game with no exchange necessary. Wednesday is Scout Night with admission ony $6 for children and $10 for adults, and scout patches for the night are available for only $2.
