Hard Luck Mallards Fall to Rapid City in Shootout 3-2
February 15, 2013 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. - Rusty Masters converted the deciding penalty shot after Kyle Peto's fluke goal tied the game in the third period and Damian Surma scored once in regulation and again in the shootout as the Rapid City Rush defeated the host Quad City Mallards 3-2 in a shootout Friday night.
The Mallards, who did earn one point for the shootout setback, fell despite getting two goals from Mike Hellyer and 47 saves from John Murray.
Masters ended the game by scoring on the ninth Rapid City penalty shot after Surma and the Mallards' Mickey Lang had swapped goals earlier in the shootout.
Peto scored the bizarre goal that evened the score at two and would eventually send the game to overtime- and, as it proved, the shootout- with eight minutes left in the third period. The defenseman's attempt to dump the puck behind the Mallard net from center ice caromed crazily off the boards and into the gaping Quad City cage after Murray had stepped out of the crease anticipating that the puck would carry to the end boards.
The Rush found itself in need of the thick slice of luck that was Peto's goal after Hellyer's wrist shot from the top of the right wing circle put the Mallards on top 2-1 at 4:48 of the third.
Hellyer had first given the Mallards the lead with a point-blank backhander at 8:46 of the first period. Surma tied the score at one from the doorstep at 13:57 of the second period.
The Mallards return to action tomorrow night at 7:05 on home ice against the Arizona Sundogs. Tomorrow evening is Kids Night at the i wireless Center- the Mallards are offering free tickets to children 12 and under for that game. Free tickets are available for up to six children accompanied by at least one adult. Kids' Night will also feature a bounce house inside the i wireless Center for the enjoyment of younger fans. In addition, mascot Mo Mallard will, as always, be on hand to join in the fun with young fans. Kids' Night tickets are available in person at the i wireless Center ticket office or by calling the Mallards at 309-277-1364.
