Lexington Legends News Release
The Lexington Legends, helped by a porous West Virginia defense, overcame a 4-0 deficit to defeat the West Virginia Power 5-4 on Monday night in front of 8,030 fans at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
The Power opened the scoring with one run in the first. With one out, Dan Grovatt singled to center. Mel Rojas followed with another single to center, and Grovatt was thrown out at third base by Emilio King. Rojas tried for second on the play, and third baseman Mike Kvasnicka's throw went wide for an error, allowing Rojas to reach third. He scored on Justin Howard's single.
West Virginia added three in the third. Eric Avila led off the inning with a home run. After Drew Maggi struck out, Grovatt homered to right. Rojas doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cole White to give the Power a 4-0 margin.
Lexington answered with two in the third. Tyler Burnett led off with a single, and advanced to second when second baseman Andy Vasquez bobbled Ben Orloff's grounder. Pena then grounded to Vasquez, whose throw went past first for a second error, allowing Orloff to score as Pena, who was credited with a single, advanced to second.
The Legends cut the lead to one at 4-3 when Telvin Nash hit a solo homer in the fifth.
Lexington tied the game in the seventh. With one out, Delino DeShields Jr. singled to left. He stole second base, and advanced to third when the throw went into center field where Rojas, backing up the play, allowed the ball to get by him for an error. Enrique Hernandez singled to drive home DeShields with the tying run.
The Legends completed the comeback in the eighth. With one out, King singled, and advanced to second on Burnett's walk. Orloff grounded into a force play at second, and when shortstop Drew Maggi tried to complete the double play, his throw to first was wide, allowing King to score the go-ahead run. The Power committed five errors in the game.
Jorge DeLeon (3-4) got the win after entering the game in the eighth with one out. Porfirio Lopez (1-1) was handed the loss in relief.
The Legends and Power will play game two of their three game series Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
