Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws had a July 4th, 2011 to remember with a walk off win on Monday night. Travis "Moose" Mattair drilled the 1st pitch he saw with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th inning off the Left Centerfield wall to score Zach Collier from 3rd Base and win the game 3-2 for Lakewood. It was tough to tell if the ball was a Home Run or if it stayed in the ballpark, but the umpires came together and ultimately ruled it a single. It was the 3rd straight win for Lakewood.
A number of guys had nice nights at the plate for Lakewood as they pounded out 13 hits in the game. Geancarlo Mendez was 3-5 at the plate and Zach Collier, Jim Murphy, Cameron Rupp, and Edgar Duran all chipped in with 2 hits each. But, the player of the game was BlueClaws 3B Travis Mattair. He was 0-2 with 2 walks on the night when he came up with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th inning. But, he put it all behind him and drilled the 1st pitch he saw high off the wall in Left Center to end the ballgame.
Phillies Relief Pitcher Brad Lidge made a relief appearance with Lakewood and pitched a scoreless 1st inning for the BlueClaws. Jesse Biddle came in and allowed 1 run over the next 4 innings. Colby Shreve, Jay Johnson, and Juan Sosa combined to pitch the final 4 innings for Lakewood with Sosa getting the win to improve to 3-2 on the year. Hagerstown Relief Pitcher Wilson Eusebio got the loss after allowing the walk off single to Mattair to fall to 0-4.
A great crowd of 8,430 was in attendance to see a Major Leaguer pitch, the BlueClaws walk off winners, and a fantastic fireworks show after the ballgame. On Tuesday, Hagerstown and Lakewood will be back at it at 7:05 pm. All-Star RHP Garett Claypool (3-3, 3.16 ERA will start for Lakewood and Hagerstown has yet to announce their starter.
