Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
HIGHLIGHTS: The West Virginia Power lost 11-9 to the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Power built an 8-0 lead, but the Grasshoppers hit two grand slams over the final four innings en route to the comeback win.
West Virginia plated two runs in the third when Elias Diaz doubled and scored on a single by Alen Hanson, who then scored on a wild pitch. The Power added six in the fourth on four hits, two walks, and an error. Carlos Mesa, making his South Atlantic League debut, hit a two-run home run to help create an eight run lead.
Greensboro's rally started against West Virginia starter Matt Benedict in the sixth. With two outs, the Grasshoppers loaded the bases against Benedict, who was replaced by Justin Ennis. Brent Keys hit a 2-1 pitch over the right field wall for Greensboro's first grand slam of the season and to halve the deficit at 8-4.
After adding a run in the seventh, the Grasshoppers scored six in the top of the ninth to take the lead, keyed by a go-ahead grand slam from James Wooster.
West Virginia would score once in the ninth to close out the scoring.
Jordan Cooper (1-2) surrendered Wooster's home run and took the loss, while Kevin Cravey (4-0) pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the Hoppers win. James Nygren pitched the ninth for his fourth save.
Four different Power players had multi-hit games as West Virginia lost for the third time when scoring nine runs in a game this season. The Power's eight run lead was also the largest surrendered this season.
West Virginia and Greensboro play game two of this series on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. Ryan Hafner and Jose Fernandez will start for the Power and Grasshoppers, respectively, with a 2:05 pm first pitch anticipated.
