Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Charleston RiverDogs topped the Hickory Crawdads, 14-9, before 2,441 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Saturday night.
After Charleston (16-5) jumped in front with three runs (only two earned) against LHP Victor Payano in the top of the first, the 'Dads (14-8) came right back with a pair in the bottom of the frame. 2B Luis Sardinas and RF Chris Grayson worked consecutive walks to start the inning. DH Rougned Odor followed with an RBI double to right field that scored Sardinas and moved Grayson to third. One out later, SS Hanser Alberto placed an RBI ground out to third base, knocking in Grayson to cut the 'Dads deficit to just 3-2.
Charleston RF Tyler Austin added a run to the RiverDogs lead with a solo homer in the top of the third, but Hickory responded with a six-run rally in the bottom of the inning to move in front. Grayson sparked the charge with a single to lead off, and then trotted home on a two-run bomb by Odor, tying the game at 4-4. CF Zach Cone got on with a single and advanced all the way to third on a stolen base with a throwing error by C Gary Sanchez on the play. One out later, 3B Drew Robinson knocked an RBI single to right field, scoring Cone for the 5-4 lead. LF Jeremy Williams singled Robinson to second, before C Joe Maloney brought him in with an RBI base hit. After 1B Jhonny Gomez was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Sardinas skied a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in Williams to make it 7-4. With RHP Fred Lewis (W, 3-0) taking over on the mound and runners at the corners, Gomez broke for second on the first pitch to Grayson. Gomez, however, stopped midway to second base and started a rundown, while Maloney darted home on the delayed double steal and scored for the final run in the frame and the 8-4 lead.
The RiverDogs responded with six runs of their own (all unearned) in the top of the sixth against RHP Nick McBride (L, 2-1). With two on and two down, RBI singles by CF Mason Williams and SS Cito Culver brought Charleston within two runs, 8-6. After 3B Dante Bichette, Jr. worked a walk to load the bases, Austin quickly unloaded them with a grand slam over the left field fence, lifting the RiverDogs to the 10-8 advantage.
Hickory cut it to just a one-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning. With Robinson at first base and two down, Williams ripped an RBI double to right-center field, plating Robinson to make it 10-9.
However, the RiverDogs padded the lead with two runs in the eighth and ninth innings. An RBI triple by Culver and an RBI grounder by Austin, who finished with seven RBIs on the day, plated the pair in the eighth. The RiverDogs then struck on a Williams sacrifice fly and an RBI double by Culver in the top of the ninth, accounting for the 14-9 final score in the Charleston win.
