POWER REPLAY: West Virginia lost 6-0 to Hickory on Friday night in front of 3,977 fans at Appalachian Power Park. The Crawdads scored a run in the first, three in the fifth, one in the sixth, and once in the ninth. The Power only managed four singles off of three different Hickory pitchers. Will Lamb earned the win with five scoreless innings while Nick Kingham took the loss after allowing four runs, one of which was earned, on four hits.
3.0 BEHIND WITH NINE TO PLAY: Hagerstown's game at Delmarva was postponed last night and the clubs will play to tonight. Hickory picked up a half game with a win and West Virginia dropped a half game, so the Suns lead the Crawdads by two and the Power by three. All three clubs have nine games remaining this season.
GRAB THE STEAMPOT: The Power are 45-38 all-time against the Crawdads dating back to 2005 and have a 27-14 mark at Appalachian Power Park. Hickory's victory on Thursday guaranteed that the Crawdads will win the season series for the third straight year against the affiliate of their old parent club (1999-2008).
BLANKING BUSINESS: West Virginia was shutout for the sixth time this season on Friday night and for the third time in the second half. The Power pitching staff has recorded four shutouts, all of which have been in the second half. As it stands at this moment, 2012 would be the first time since West Virginia became a Pittsburgh affiliate that the club was shutout more than it blanked their opponents.
AVILA POINTS: Eric Avila has reached base in 13 straight games with atleast one hit. The third baseman is batting .400 over his last 13 with 20 hits in 50 at bats, has launched seven home runs, and has driven in 18... Eric Avila was named as the South Atlantic League's Player of the Week for August 13-19. The Power infielder hit .423 over seven games with nine runs batted in and hit home runs in four consecutive games while the club played in Kannapolis last week... Eric Avila's grand slam on Tuesday was the first since Jarek Cunningham's bases loaded blast on June 10, 2010 at Asheville.
26 DOWN AND 1 TO GO: Nick Kingham leads the SAL with 26 starts this season and is lined up to start one more game in 2012. The right-hander has compiled 108 strikeouts over 120.0 innings pitched, both tops on the club. Since the Power became a Pirates affiliate in 2009, only Hunter Strickland (126.1 in 2009), Jason Erickson (128.2 in 2010), and Zack Von Rosenberg (125.1 last year) have thrown more innings. Kingham lines up to pitch on Wednesday at Charleston in his final start this season.
