CHARLESTON, WV - The West Virginia Power edged the Hickory Crawdads, 4-3, before 4,021 fans at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, WV on Saturday night .
The Power (34-28, 57-75) plated a pair in the bottom of the first against LHP Andrew Faulkner. Consecutive singles by CF Taylor Lewis and LF Francisco Aponte started the frame. 3B Eric Avila brought in Lewis with an RBI ground out, advancing Aponte to third base. Aponte then came home on an RBI single by 2B Dan Gamache, putting the Power in front, 2-0.
West Virginia added a tally to the lead in the bottom of the fourth frame. Gamache started things with a double, and then quickly came home on an RBI single from 1B Chris Lashmet, making it 3-0.
The Crawdads (34-28, 70-61) started the comeback with two runs against LHP Mike Jefferson (W, 6-7) in the top of the fifth. 1B Kevin Torres and C Jorge Alfaro started the charge with back-to-back base hits with no outs. 2B Nick Urbanus attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but Jefferson fielded the ball and threw out Torres at third for the first out of the inning on the fielder's choice. After a fly out, DH Rougned Odor was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with two down. RF Trever Adams came through for the 'Dads with a two-run single lined to center field, bringing home Alfaro and Urbanus to cut the deficit down to 3-2.
Hickory came back with the game-tying run in the top of the sixth. With one away, LF Alejandro Selen skied a fly ball to the warning track in left field. Aponte raced back to retire the fly ball, but missed the catch, enabling Selen to reach safely and get all the way to second base. Torres struck again with an RBI single, plating Selen and squaring the score, 3-3.
The Power, though, moved right back in front in the bottom of the sixth inning against LHP Victor Payano (L, 6-8). Gamache led off with a walk, and then raced around to third on a double by Lashmet. After a strikeout, C Elias Diaz drove an RBI sacrifice fly to right field, plating Gamache for the 4-3 lead.
Payano dealt two more frames in scoreless fashion keeping the 'Dads close, but Power LHP Robbie Kilcrease and RHP Nathan Kilcrease (S, 13) combined for three scoreless relief innings to close the 4-3 win for West Virginia.
