LEXINGTON, KY - Ali Castillo lined an RBI double down the right field line in the tenth inning to break a scoreless tie and give the Charleston RiverDogs a 1-0 victory over the Lexington Legends on Saturday night in South Atlantic League action at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
Charleston's third straight win clinches a series victory and puts their record at 66-62 (27-34 in the second half). Lexington's losing streak hits ten with this loss to drop them to 67-63 (28-33 in the second half).
With one out in the top of the tenth and Casey Stevenson on first, Castillo's (2-3, RBI) double off Dayan Diaz (4-4) brought Stevenson all the way around with the game's first run and the eventual game-winner. It was his second hit of the night and gave the RiverDogs their third consecutive one-run win. Pedro Guerra earned his seventh save by striking out the side in the bottom of the tenth. Dan Mahoney (2-0) picked up his second win after he tossed two hitless innings.
Through nine innings, both pitching staffs dueled to a draw. Corey Black started for Charleston and in five frames, he allowed only one hit and one walk. Lexington almost got to him right away when Chan Jong Moon doubled to start the bottom of the first, but that was the only hit the Legends would get all night. Black retired the next three batters and went on to set down 12 in a row. Rigoberto Arrebato came in in the sixth and continued the fine pitching with two scoreless innings of his own. Mahoney took it from there.
Meanwhile, David Rollins was matching the RiverDogs' hurlers pitch for pitch. After allowing two singles in the second inning, Rollins put away the next 17 men. He was replaced in the eighth after throwing seven and two-thirds innings and giving up only three hits and no walks with ten strikeouts. Murilo Gouvea replaced Rollins and got the last out of the eighth to keep the game scoreless. Diaz threw up a zero in the ninth, but couldn't repeat the trick in the tenth.
On Sunday, this four game series concludes with a game beginning at 1:35 pm. The scheduled starters for the finale are RHP Scottie Allen for Charleston (4-7, 4.33 ERA) and RHP Chris Devenski (1-2, 5.28 ERA) for Lexington.
