
Suns Sweep Doubleheader from Shorebirds

Hagerstown, Md. - The Hagerstown Suns (37-24) broke a 5-5 tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds (22-39) 6-5 in game two of the doubleheader on Saturday night. Hagerstown also won game one 3-1. The Suns have won all three games in the series.
The Suns took an early lead with two runs in the second inning in game one. Caleb Ramsey drew a lead off walk. Then, JR Higley singled. Shorebirds starter Miguel Chalas was called for a balk to move both runners into scoring position. Cole Leonida followed with a hard single past the dive of Connor Narron to score both runs.
The Suns tacked on a run in the third. Khayyan Norfork singled to open the inning. Then, Cutter Dykstra doubled to deep left field to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Suns starter Brian Rauh limited the Shorebirds offense to just three hits over six innings. He struck out six and walked two batters.
The Shorebirds scored their lone run in the seventh inning. Rauh issued a lead off walk to Michael Ohlman, who reached base for a 20th straight game. Then, Rauh was replaced by Richie Mirowski. Lucas Herbst doubled to right-center field to advance Ohlman to third. Wynston Sawyer hit a hard grounder to short to bring in Ohlman.
Miguel Chalas was pinned with the loss over five innings. He allowed five hits and three runs. Chalas issued a season high four walks with two strikeouts.
In game two, the Shorebirds struck first. Greg Lorenzo was hit by a pitch to open the inning. He stole second base and reached third on a wild pitch. Then, with two outs, Ohlman smacked a single to right-center to put the Shorebirds in front 1-0.
The Suns tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on a two out RBI single to left field by Adrian Nieto.
In the second, the Suns grabbed the lead on a home run to left-center field by JR Higley.
The Suns used a three run fifth inning to build a 5-1 lead. The Suns had just one hit in the inning, but capitalized on three walks and a hit batter. Caleb Ramsey had the only run scoring hit of the inning.
The Shorebirds battled back in the sixth inning. Lucas Herbst led off the inning with a solo homer to right field. The Shorebirds then loaded the bases with a walk and two singles. Jason Esposito scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 5-3. Then, Roderick Bernadina hit a line drive single down the left field line to tie the game at 5-5.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Suns grabbed the lead back. Bryce Ortega singled to left field and Bernadina bobbled the ball and Ortega sprinted to second. Bernandina's throw to second scooted into right field, advancing Ortega to third. Then, Burns singled to left field to put the Suns on top 6-5.
Colin Bates retired the Shorebirds in order in the seventh to end the game.
Christian Meza earned the win in game two over two innings. David Baker, who pitched the bottom of the sixth, took the loss.
The Shorebirds and Suns play the series finale on Sunday, August 26 at 1:05pm.
