POWER REPLAY: West Virginia beat Charleston 9-2 on Monday to open a seven game homestand. The Power plated three in the first inning and added a pair in the second. Willy Garcia provided the rest of the offense with a sixth inning solo home run and a three run shot in the eighth. Mike Jefferson pitched six innings for his first career quality start, allowing one run on three hits while earning the win.
FOUR GONE CONCLUSION: Eric Avila has been named as the South Atlantic League's Player of the Week for August 13-19. ThePower infielder hit .423 over seven games with nine runs batted in and hit home runs in four consecutive games while the club played in Kannapolis last week. Avila is the first West Virginia player to be honored by the league this season. This leaves Delmarva as the only team that has not had a position player or pitcher to earn a weekly award yet this season. Avila is the second player in Power franchise history to hit one out in four consecutive games, matching Caleb Gindl's feat from August of the 2008 season.
MCPHERSON TO THE MAJORS: The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled Kyle McPherson to their active roster on Monday and the right-hander made his Major League debut last night. McPherson pitched for the West Virginia during the 2010 season and has become the 28th player to wear a Power jersey to reach the big leagues since 2005. Last night, McPherson tossed two scoreless innings of relief and struck out Edinson Volquez on four pitches for his first big league K.
DOZEN DOWN: Jose Osuna's hitting streak has reached 12 straight. This is Osuna's sixth streak of six or more games, most of any player on the team, and is his second that has reached double digits. The Power first baseman is batting .294 over his last 12 games with two home runs and seven runs batted in.
WELCOME TO WV: Pittsburgh made a series of roster moves that affected the Power today. The Pirates promoted reliever Emmanuel De Leon to the Bradenton Marauders roster and placed outfielder Junior Sosa on the Disabled List. To replace De Leon in the bullpen, Pat Ludwig was promoted from State College. Ludwig was taken out of Yale with the Pirates 10th round selection in the 2012 Draft. Pittsburgh also promoted Alex Fuselier from the Spikes to the Power. The outfielder was selected in the 21st round of the 2011 First Year Player Draft from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
BRING ON THE BABY BOMBERS: The RiverDogs own a 23-21 edge in the all-time series dating back to 2005 and have won seven of nine this year against the Power. West Virginia, however, holds an 11-9 mark at home in the all-time series. A HALF BACK: West Virginia enters play tonight tied with Hickory for second place, sitting just a half game back of Hagerstown. The Suns are hosting the Intimidators while the Crawdads are at home against the Rome Braves.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia placed Gregory Polanco on the Disabled List prior to Saturday's game against Kannapolis. The move was made retroactive to August 16 and the All-Start outfielder is eligible to return on August 24... Justin Ennis was promoted back to West Virginia from State College on Saturday. Ennis began the season with the Power and appeared in seven games before being transferred to State College on May 11.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh fell 3-1 at San Diego. The Pirates remain 6.5 games behind the Cincinnati Reds in the NL Central... Indianapolis blanked Syracuse 2-0... Altoona knocked off Trenton 6-2. Quincy Latimore drove in a pair to pace Curve... Bradenton was off last night... State College dropped a 6-4final at Williamsport.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, WV and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
