Hickory Crawdads News Release

HICKORY, NC - The Rome Braves hung on for the 5-4 victory against the Hickory Crawdads in a rain-shortened, five-inning game on Tuesday evening. Before being called by the umpires, the game went into two separate rain delays, combining for an hour and 57 minutes of delay time.

After the Braves (36-20, 54-72) tallied a run in the top of the first inning, they added to their lead with three more in the top of the second against LHP Kevin Matthews (L, 2-4). 3B Kyle Kubitza reached on a fielding error to start the frame, and then DH Brandon Drury knocked a base hit to put two runners on. After a walk drawn by RF Will Skinner loaded the bases, C Cory Brownsten singled to right field, moving everyone up ninety feet and plating Kubitza. Back-to-back RBI fielder's choices by SS Elmer Reyes and CF Tony Mueller stretched the lead to 4-0.

Another run in the top of the third opened the gap further in the Braves favor. LF Robby Hefflinger doubled down the left-field line and took third on a fly out. Drury plated Hefflinger with an RBI single and Rome took the 5-0 advantage.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the game entered its first rain delay in the top of the fifth inning with two outs and two runners aboard for the Braves. When the game resumed after 37 minutes, RHP Jose Monegro navigated the 'Dads out of the jam in scoreless fashion.

The Crawdads (32-26, 68-59) then raced back into the ballgame as the rain started again the bottom of the fifth inning. DH Alejandro Selen led off the inning with a walk and 1B Kevin Torres followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. C Jorge Alfaro got the 'Dads on the board with an RBI ground out, plating Selen and advancing Torres to third. After SS Luis Sardinas worked a free pass, 2B Rougned Odor drove an RBI single to right field, scoring Torres. With runners at first and second, LF Trever Adams launched a two-run triple to center field, bringing home Sardinas and Odor to cut the 'Dads deficit to just 5-4.

However, with the rain coming down, the umpires called for the tarp and another rain delay before the start of the sixth inning. After the second delay lasted an hour and 20 minutes, the umpires called the game and the Braves hung on for the 5-4 win in five frames.

Rome RHP Navery Moore (W, 7-3) made the start for the Braves and earned the win with four scoreless innings before the first rain delay.
