Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, WV - Cody Grice swatted a three-run homer in the second inning and Nick Goody struck out the final four batters of the game to help lead the Charleston RiverDogs to a 5-4 win over the West Virginia Power in South Atlantic League action on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park.

The win snaps the RiverDogs four-game losing streak and gives them a record of 63-61 (24-33 in the second half). The Power's three-game win streak comes to an end as they fall to 55-73 (32-26 in the second half).

After a scoreless first, Charleston's power stroke put them ahead in the second against starter Robby Rowland (8-4). Saxon Butler started the inning by clubbing his second home run of the year out to right-center. Later in the inning, with two on and one out, Grice (2-4, HR, 3 RBI, run) provided the second homer of the inning with his three-run bomb that carried over the wall in center. It was the first homer of the year for the right fielder and staked his team to a 4-0 lead.

Handed an early four-run lead, the RiverDogs' pitching staff took it from there. Scottie Allen started the game and threw shutout ball for four and two-thirds innings. The Power only picked up three hits and one walk off Allen while he struck out five. He fell just one out short of his fifth win.

Fred Lewis (6-2) relieved Allen in the fifth and got the next four outs to earn the win before handing the pitching chore over to Pedro Guerra, who tossed a scoreless eighth.

After a Casey Stevenson RBI single pushed the lead to five, the Power used a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Eric Avila crushed a grand slam homer to left to cut Charleston's lead to one. Avila's slam was the first one allowed by Charleston all year and the first one hit by West Virginia all year.

After another walk, Goody took over and made sure the Power wouldn't score again. He struck out Willy Garcia to end the eighth and then struck out the side in the ninth to end the game and earn his sixth save.

The rubber game of this three game set is Wednesday night at 7:05 pm with RHP Bryan Mitchell (7-11, 5.07 ERA) going for Charleston and LHP Zac Fuesser (3-6, 4.86 ERA) taking the ball for West Virginia.
