Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Lakewood, NJ (May 29, 2009) - The Lakewood BlueClaws took advantage of two West Virginia Power errors late in Friday night's contest at FirstEnergy Park, and scored single runs in the ninth and tenth inning to take the final game of the series 3-2.
Anthony Gose reached on a one out walk in the bottom of the first inning and stole second base before scoring the game's first run on Jim Murphy's double. The Power tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth on Chase D'Arnaud's broken bat single into left field which scored Greg Picart.
West Virginia took the lead one inning later as Jeremy Farrell began the fifth with a base hit and scored on Quincy Latimore's double off the wall in left. Troy Hanzawa began the bottom of the ninth inning with a base hit. Ryan Kelly threw to first base in an attempt to pick him off, but the ball hit off of Calvin Anderson's glove, allowing Hanzawa to reach second base. Anderson was charged with the error. D'Arby Myers then laid down a bunt single, putting runners on second and third with nobody out, and Harold Garcia drove in Hanzawa to tie the game on a sacrifice fly.
Austin McClune reached on a two out single for West Virginia in the top of the tenth inning and moved to second base on a wild pitch but was left stranded when Josue Peley grounded out to end the inning. Jeremy Farrell's errant throw allowed Travis D'Arnaud to reach in the bottom of the tenth. Murphy was then hit by a pitch and Jeremy Hamilton singled into center field to score D'Arnaud.
B.J. Rosenberg (4-1) tossed a scoreless tenth inning to earn the victory. Eddie Pena (1-1) allowed the unearned run to score in the tenth inning and was tagged with the loss. Duke Welker started the game for West Virginia and allowed just a run on four hits over four and two-thirds, while striking out five and walking seven. Ryan Kelly and Owen Brolsma allowed an unearned run on two hits over four and a third combined innings of relief.
West Virginia fell to 18-30 after the loss, and the BlueClaws improved to 28-19 with the win. Greg Picart led the Power with a 2-for-2 performance and had five hits in the series. McClune's base hit in the tenth inning extended his hitting streak to seven games. Jeremy Farrell went 1-for-4 and extended his on base streak to eight games. He went 10-for-25 on the road trip with seven runs scored and three RBI. West Virginia finished the trip with a record of 4-4.
West Virginia will begin a four game series with the Lake County Captains at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday night. Left hander Rudy Owens (5-1, 2.81) will start for the Power and the Captains will counter with left hander T.J. House (1-5, 3.33). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM
