Charleston RiverDogs News Release

Charleston, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs will square off against a future hall of famer as the Boston Red Sox have announced that right-handed pitcher John Smoltz will be making his third rehabilitation start and second for the Greenville Drive Sunday, May 31st at Greenville's Fluor Field with first pitch set for 4:05 p.m.

Smoltz has already made two rehabilitation starts - once on May 20th for Greenville and once on May 27th for Double-A Portland. The May 20th start for the Drive was against the Augusta GreenJackets at Lake Olmstead Stadium in Augusta, Georgia as Smoltz allowed one hit and struck out two in 3.0 shutout innings pitched.

The Warren, MI native won the 1996 National League Cy Young Award along with being an 8-time All-Star, Smoltz possesses a 210-147 career record with a 3.26 ERA and 154 saves in 708 games, 466 as a starter. Due to three separate stints on the disabled list a year ago, Smoltz was restricted to just six games/five starts. His decision for surgery to repair a torn labrum on June 10th marked the official end to the 2008 season.

The last time the RiverDogs opposed a major league pitcher was on a rehab assignment also was against the Greenville Drive on Opening Day in 2007, when left-hander Jon Lester made his first rehab start in his comeback from cancer.

Charleston returns to The Joe on Saturday, June 6 as the RiverDogs will tackle the Rome Braves, an affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, for a three-game series. Tickets for the upcoming homestand can be purchased by visiting the RiverDogs website at www.riverdogs.com or by calling the box office at (843) 577-DOGS.
