Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Intimidators stayed even with the Suns on Friday night at Municipal Stadium, but ran out of gas late, falling 5-4 to Hagerstown in 14 innings.
Charlie Fermaint singled off of Charlis Burdie (2-4) with two outs in the bottom of the 14th to score Robby Jacobsen from second and send the Suns home a winner. The Kannapolis loss snapped a three-game Intimidators winning streak and ended a Suns stretch of six losses in a row.
The teams remained tied from the seventh through the bottom of the 14th thanks to a series of special relief performances. The Intimidators Kevin Asselin worked five shutout innings-from the ninth through the 13th-to keep Kannapolis (23-25) alive while the offense was floundering.
The bats were held in check by Justin Philabaum and Chris Lugo (4-1) and did not register a hit after the ninth inning. Philabaum was especially impressive, going four innings without giving up a hit. Philabaum and Lugo combined to get the last 11 batters the Intimidators sent to the plate in order.
Hagerstown got out to an early lead against Greg Infante thanks to a solo home run by Derek Norris. Seth Loman evened the game in the fourth with a home run of his own off of Hagerstown starter Terrence Engles.
The Intimidators looked poised to finish off the sweep when they went ahead by a score of 4-2 with three runs in the seventh. But the Suns (21-24) responded with a two-RBI base hit from Tyler Moore in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game, 4-4.
The 14-inning contest was by far the longest of the season. The Intimidators had never gone more than 11 frames in a game this season and the 4:06 game time was nearly a half hour longer than the previous high.
