Power Double up BlueClaws

The West Virginia Power defeated the Lakewood BlueClaws 10-5 Thursday evening to open a home stand at Appalachian Power Park. West Virginia came back after being down 4-0 to shoot ahead and never look back on their way to victory.

The BlueClaws jumped ahead of the Power picking up four runs in the top of the second inning. Steve Singleton singled with one out and Anthony Hewitt reached with a two out hit by pitch. Singleton and Hewitt scored on a double by Cameron Rupp. After Carlos Alonso was hit by a pitch, Rupp and Alonso scored on a double from Edgar Duran putting Lakewood ahead 4-0.

West Virginia responded with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Chase Lyles tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly out by Dan Grovatt. Kawika Emsley-Pai walked and scored on a double from Kevin Mort. Mort came across to score on a single by Drew Maggi cutting the BlueClaw lead to 4-3.

The Power jumped ahead of the BlueClaws with two runs in the fifth inning. Maggi reached on an error and Andy Vasquez followed with a double moving Maggi to third. Mel Rojas Jr. singled up the middle into centerfield driving in both Maggi and Vasquez to give West Virginia a 5-4 lead.

The Power added to their lead collecting two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Emsley-Pai walked and Mort immediately followed with a single. Maggi drove a line drive into centerfield that bounced awkwardly away from Zach Collier and scored Emsley-Pai and Mort boosting the Power lead to 7-4.

West Virginia gained more insurance in the eighth inning with three runs to move ahead 10-4. Maggi, Vasquez, and Cole White scored in an inning that saw a hit batsman, a single, an intentional walk, an error, a play at the plate to close the frame.

The BlueClaws picked up a fifth run with a solo home run by Steve Singleton, but it wasn't enough to rally back as the Power picked up the 10-5 victory.

Tyler Waldron (7-6) picked up the win for West Virginia with six innings of work, giving up four runs on three hits while striking out four Lakewood batters. Garrett Claypool (3-7) took the loss for the BlueClaws with five and one third innings of work. Claypool gave up seven runs on ten hits and struck out six Power batters. Brooks Pounders pitched the final three innings for West Virginia and notched his second save of the year.

The Power and BlueClaws play game two of this four-game set at 7:05 pm Friday evening. Colton Cain (5-7) is slated to be added to the roster in time to start for the Power against Lisalberto Bonilla (2-3) on Purple Power Night at Appalachian Power Park. West Virginia will wear purple jerseys that will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting pancreatic cancer research.
