Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (July 28, 2011) -- Dan Black's flare to shallow left field scored Carlos Sanchez from second base to give the Kannapolis Intimidators a walk off win, 2-1, over the Asheville Tourists on Thursday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The thrilling finish nearly overshadowed starting pitcher Phil Negus' performance, as he no- hit the Tourists through the first six innings.
Negus, making his third straight start and fifth on the season, retired 18 of the first 19 batters he faced with one batter reaching on an error in the second inning. Asheville's Cristhian Adames broke up the no-hitter with a home run to lead off the seven inning, tying the game 1-1. The Wake Forest product pitched a career-best 6 1/3 innings, allowing a run on two hits matching his season high with six strikeouts in a no decision.
Side-arming lefty Wes Whisler relieved Negus in the seventh and tossed a scoreless eighth, allowing one hit and a walk with two strikeouts. Chris Bassitt, the White Sox 16th round pick in this June's draft, tossed a scoreless ninth and 10th inning to record his first professional win. Bassitt (1-0) gave up two hit while striking out three.
Carlos Sanchez led off the 10th inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Bruce Kern intentionally walked Trayce Thompson to set up a potential double play, Dan Black came to the plate and ending the game on the first pitch he saw. Sanchez raced from second base and slid head first into home plate for the game-winning run.
Kern (4-5) tossed 1 2/3 innings of relief, including a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth, but took the loss for Asheville. Starter Peter Tago was effectively wild, allowing one run on four hits over six innings with four strike outs, three walks and a hit batter.
Collin Kuhn drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the third and scored on Marcus Semien's groundout for a 1-0 Intimidators lead.
The Intimidators continue the four-game series against the Tourists on Friday at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. For ticket information, call the box office at (704) 932-3267 or visit www.IntimidatorsBaseball.com .
