Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets were held to just six hits in a 5-3 loss to the Hickory Crawdads in the opener of a four-game series between the two teams on Thursday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The GreenJackets have now dropped six of their last eight games after losing their fourth straight - their longest losing streak of the 2011 season.
The teams traded runs in the first before the Crawdads jumped in front for good in the second. Jurickson Profar opened up the game with a triple for the Crawdads and scored on Jake Skole's sacrifice fly to put Hickory up 1-0. In the home half of the frame, Carlos Willoughby walked, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and then scored on Chris Lofton's RBI single to tie the game at one.
On the second pitch of the second inning, Tomas Telis took Augusta starter Gaspar Santiago deep to give the Crawdads a 2-1 lead on Telis' tenth home run of the year. The Crawdads would never again trail, scoring twice more in the fifth on a wild pitch and a throwing error to go up 4-1.
Santiago (3-5) lost his second straight start, firing five innings and allowing runs in his final inning of work for the second straight start. He surrendered four runs - three earned - on five hits and three walks while striking out four.
The GreenJackets rallied and nearly tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, the GreenJackets had the bases loaded on two hits and an error. A passed ball allowed Rafael Rodriguez to score from third and cut Hickory's lead to two. With two on in scoring position, Willoughby's sacrifice fly made it a one-run game. Chris Lofton grounded out to first - narrowly losing a footrace to the bag with Hickory starter Luke Jackson - to end the inning with the tying run at second base and the score stood at 4-3.
Jackson (4-2) allowed three runs - one earned - in his first win in almost a month, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out three. The Hickory bullpen allowed just two hits in four scoreless innings to finish off the GreenJackets, with Jimmy Reyes working the final two to earn his second save of the year.
The Crawdads added their final run on Josh Richmond's two-out, two-strike RBI triple off Edward Concepcion in the eighth inning. Six of Hickory's ten hits went for extra bases while the GreenJackets had just one of their six hits go for extra bases and now have just five extra base hits out of their last 46 total hits.
The GreenJackets will try to get back to their winning ways on Friday night when they send Shawn Sanford (7-6, 2.53) to the mound in the second game of the series against Hickory's Joe Van Meter (5-2, 2.98). First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
