Hickory Crawdads News Release
AUGUSTA, GA - The Hickory Crawdads, 1st-Half Northern Division Champions, topped the Augusta GreenJackets, 5-3, before 3,553 fans at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Thursday night.
The Crawdads (61-40, 21-12) struck for the lead right away in the top of the first against LHP Gaspar Santiago (L, 3-5). SS Jurickson Profar sparked the offense with a lead-off triple, and then CF Jake Skole brought him in with an RBI sacrifice fly, making it 1-0.
The GreenJackets (48-54, 17-15) evened the score in the bottom of the first against RHP Luke Jackson (W, 4-2). 2B Carlos Willoughby led off with a walk, stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Willoughby raced home on an RBI single by CF Chris Lofton, tying the game at 1-1.
The 'Dads, though, retook the lead on the second pitch of the top of the second, which DH Tomas Telis hammered over the left field wall for a solo shot, making it 2-1. The Crawdads added two more against Santiago in the top of the fifth. C Kellin Deglan swung his way to second with a double to start the frame. One out later, Profar joined him on the bases with a walk. Santiago then unleashed consecutive wild pitches, advancing both runners one base each time, eventually scoring Deglan with Profar getting to third. On the fourth ball in a walk to Skole, C Joel Weeks attempted to pick off Profar with a snap throw to third, but fired wide of the bag, enabling Profar to pop up and score on the error, putting Hickory in the 4-1 lead.
Augusta refused to stay too far behind for too long, plating a pair of unearned runs against Jackson in the bottom of the fifth. An error on a fielder's choice put runners at first and second with no outs to begin the rally. One out later, SS Ydwin Villegas singled his way on, loading the bases. Jackson misfired with a wild pitch, allowing LF Rafael Rodriguez to score and the other runners to move to second and third, before Willoughby plated the stanza's second run with a sacrifice fly, bringing Augusta within one run, 4-3.
RHP Ben Henry took over on the mound to start the sixth inning and kept the 'Dads in the lead with two scoreless frames. Hickory then added a run in the top of the eighth on a two-out RBI triple by RF Josh Richmond, before LHP Jimmy Reyes (S, 2) dealt two scoreless relief innings of his own, closing the 5-3 win for the Crawdads.
