
Shorebirds Sneak Past Suns, 5-4, in Game One

Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (48-55, 13-20) scored five unanswered runs between the second and third innings to defeat the Hagerstown Suns 5-4 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Thursday night.
The Suns were first to strike in the second inning. Jason Martinson reached on a walk and advanced to second on a throwing error by Jarret Martin. Then, Wade Moore doubled down the right field line to give the Suns a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Justino Cuevas hit a flare single into left-center field to increase the lead to 2-0.
The Shorebirds responded immediately in the bottom of the second. Michael Ohlman hit a lined single into left field to ignite the inning. Joe Oliveira followed with a walk to put runners at first and second. Then, Garabez Rosa dropped a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Adam Gaylord followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Ohlman. Michael Rooney then hit a hard one-hopper down the left field to tie the game at 2-2.
The Shorebirds took their first lead of the night in the third. Ty Kelly drew a one out walk. Two batters later, Ohlman drew a two out walk. Then, Oliveira ripped a double to left field to score Kelly. Garabez Rosa followed with a two-run double through the left-center field gap to give the 'Birds a 5-2 lead.
The lead remained intact until the eighth inning. Kevin Keyes reached second on a throwing error by Michael Rooney to open the inning. Later in inning, Mills Rogers doubled to trim the deficit to 5-3. Cuevas delivered a sacrifice fly RBI to left field to cut the deficit to one run. Luis Noel got Michael Taylor to fly out to right to strand the tying run at second base.
David Walters entered in the ninth inning and faced four batters to earn his South Atlantic League best 24th save of the season.
Jarret Martin picked up the win over six strong innings. He allowed just four hits and two runs. A.J. Cole was tagged with the loss over three innings.
The Shorebirds and Suns play game two of the series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Tim Berry is the scheduled starter for the Shorebirds.
