Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Salisbury, MD- June 11, 2013)- The West Virginia Power split a doubleheader with the Delmarva Shorebirds on Tuesday night. The Power took game one by an 11-0 final and dropped the nightcap to the Shorebirds 5-4.
In game one, West Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Barrett Barnes singled to leadoff the game and later scored on a single by Stetson Allie to give the Power the early advantage. West Virginia sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the third, scoring eight runs on six hits to build an 9-0 lead.
Joely Rodriguez (5-4) earned the win with five shutout innings, walking two and striking out four. Mark Blackmar (0-5) took the loss after allowing all nine runs over two and a third. Allie went 3-3 with two walks and drove in five, including a pair in the seventh on his 17th home run of the year. Josh Bell and Walker Gourley also collected three hits apiece to help the Power take the first game.
In the nightcap, Barnes again scored in the first on a base hit by Allie for a 1-0 West Virginia edge. The Shorebirds, however, evened the score in the home half of the inning and two the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third.
Trailing 3-1 in the sixth, Dilson Herrera doubled and scored on a two base hit by Bell. Eric Wood doubled in Bell to even the game out at three runs each. A singled from Raul Fortunato pushed the Power back into the lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Delmarva loaded the bases against Kyle Haynes. Steel Russell singled in Anthony Caronia to tie the game at four. With one out, Conner Narron singled to the right side of a drawn-in infield. The ball hit off of Russell while running to second. The play was initially ruled dead before Shorebirds manager Luis Pujols argued the call. After an 11 minute delay that saw umpires Jake Wilburn and Clay Hamm retreat to the locker room for clarification, the call was corrected to a single that brought in Roderick Bernadina for the winning run since Russell was running behind the infielders on the edge of the grass.
Haynes (0-1) took the loss in the second games while Dennis Torres (1-2) garnered the win.
West Virginia and Delmarva will play another doubleheader on Wednesday to make up for Monday night's postponement. The Power are now three games behind Hickory with six games remaining in the first half. The South Atlantic League All-Star break begins on June 17 with the mid-summer classic to be play on June 18 at Lakewood's FirstEnergy Park. The Power open the second half of the 2013 season at home against Lakewood on June 20. For tickets or information, call 304-344-2287 or visit www.wvpower.com.
