WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky. - Four Rome pitchers combined to hold the Lexington Legends to two hits as the Braves took a 3-2 victory over Lexington Wednesday afternoon.
The Legends scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Bubba Starling walked, moved from first to third on a wild pitch by Rome starter Andry Ubiera, and scored on a two-out single by Fred Ford.
Rome moved in front with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Chase Anselment led off with a ground rule double to left field. Carlos Franco struck out, but Eric Garcia walked. After making a throw to second on a pickoff attempt, Lexington starter Alec Mills had to leave the game with an injury. There was no immediate report on the extent of the injury to Mills, who had been named to the South Atlantic League Southern Division All-Star team and had pitched 19 consecutive scoreless innings through the fourth inning Wednesday. Chas Byrne relieved Mills with a 2-2 count to Joey Meneses. Meneses eventually drew a walk, loading the bases, and a walk to Blake Brown forced in a run to tie the game. After Jose Peraza flied out, a walk to Levi Hyams forced in the go-ahead run.
The Braves added a run in the eighth inning. Hyams led off with a single and stole second. Josh Elander walked, and a wild pitch by Legends reliever Kevin Allen moved the runners to second and third. A base hit by Trenton Moses scored Hyams, and the Braves led 3-1.
The Legends cut the lead to one with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Kenny Diekroeger led off with a single, and Jin-Ho Shin was hit by a pitch. Ethan Chapman sacrificed the runners to second and third, and Diekroeger scored on a ground out by Humberto Arteaga. Starling then hit a line drive headed for right center field, but a leaping catch by Garcia, the second baseman, ended the rally. Alex Wilson, who entered the game at the start of the eighth inning, retired the Legends in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Zach Jadofsky (4-1), who relieved Ubiera in the fourth inning, got the win. Mills (2-3) took the loss. Wilson picked up his second save.
The Braves won two out of three in the series.
The Legends, who were eliminated from the South Atlantic League Southern Division first-half race with the loss, will travel to Asheville for a four-game series that will close out the first half of the season.
