Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (June 12, 2013) -- The Augusta GreenJackets scored five unanswered runs for a 5-3 win to secure a series sweep of the Kannapolis Intimidators at CMC-NorthEast Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Intimidators put the tying runs on base in the home half of the eighth with two outs, but the GreenJackets turned to closer Tyler Mizenko to get the final out of the inning, stranding runners on the corners. Mizenko quieted the Intimidators with a scoreless ninth for his 14th save of the season, second-most in the South Atlantic League.
Kannapolis starter Euclides Leyer (2-8) took the loss, his second to the GreenJackets this season, allowing four runs (three earned) over 6.0 innings. His fastball sat consistently in the mid 90s, however he struggled with control, walking three batters and plunking two more.
Augusta broke a 3-3 tie with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. Jesus Galindo doubled to left field, and Trevor Brown followed with the go-ahead base hit that took a bad hop past third baseman Eric Grabe. Rafael Rodriguez extended the Augusta advantage, scoring on a Stew Brase balk in the eighth inning for a 5-3 lead.
Kannapolis opened the scoring in the second inning when Michael Johnson doubled to lead off the inning -- his first of two doubles on the night. Two batters later Eric Grabe singled to cash Johnson, 1-0. Grabe paced the Intimidators at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
The Intimidators added two more runs in the third. Michael Marjama reached on an infield single and scored on Grabe's second run-scoring single of the night. Augusta starting pitcher Joe Biagini plunked Yoandy Barroso, who later scored on a GreenJackets error for a 3-0 lead.
Augusta bounced back with two runs in the fourth inning. Chuckie Jones doubled to score Stephen Branca, and Rafael Rodriguez scored on an Alberto Robles ground out to pull within one. The GreenJackets evened the game, 3-3, in the fifth inning when Ben Turner singled up the middle to cash Mitch Delfino, who drew a lead off walk.
Biagini (5-1) earned the win, his second over Kannapolis this season, working 5.0 innings before turning things over to Brandon Farley, who combined with Mizenko for 4.0 scoreless relief innings.
The Intimidators open a four-game series against the Rome Braves at home on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. For ticket information, please call the F&M Bank Box Office at (704) 932-3267 or visit intimidatorsbaseball.com.
