Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Eastlake, OH (July 1, 2009) - The Lake County Captains snapped a scoreless tie with a four-run fourth inning on Wednesday afternoon at Classic Park, but West Virginia plated five runs just two innings later and kept the Captains off the board in the second half of the contest to take the second game of the series by the final score of 5-4.
The first four batters reached, and scored for the Captains in their four-run fourth inning. Walter Diaz began the inning with a walk before Wes Hodges and Adam Abraham ripped back-to-back singles to load the bases. Lake County scored their first run when Donnie Webb walked with the bases loaded. Chris Nash grounded out to score Hodges, Abraham came home on a wild pitch and Mark Thompson's sacrifice fly plated Webb to end the inning.
The Power did all of their damage in the top of the sixth inning. Bobby Spain's second of three walks started the inning and he moved to second on Starling Marte's base hit. They both advanced on a wild pitch before Austin McClune brought Spain home on a sacrifice fly. Marte came in on a wild pitch a few moments later. Walks were issued to Danny Bomback and Josue Peley before Adenson Chourio's fly ball out to center field. Quincy Latimore stepped in with two on and two-out and delivered the eventual game winning three-run homer to give the Power the lead for good. It was his sixth of the season, and his second on the trip.
Noah Krol (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings of relief, allowed a pair of hits and struck out one to get the victory. Wilson Ortiz pitched a scoreless ninth inning to snag his first save of the season. Kaimi Mead (0-1) gave up all five runs in the sixth inning and was tagged with the loss. Krol, Ortiz and Diego Moreno combined to toss five scoreless innings of four-hit relief for the Power.
West Virginia improved to 32-44 overall, and 5-1 in the second half after the win, while the Captains fell to 35-39 overall and 4-3 in the second half after the loss. Robbie Grossman paced the Power with a 3-for-5 performance and extended his on base streak to 21 games. Quincy Latimore went 2-for-5 and has both hit safely, and knocked in at least one run in six straight games. Adenson Chourio turned in the other multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Erik Huber went 0-for-5, bringing his 12 game hitting streak to an end.
West Virginia will continue the four game series against the Lake County Captains at Classic Park on Thursday night. The Power will start right hander Rafael De Los Santos (0-1, 12.00) and the Captains will counter with right hander Danny Salazar (1-3, 6.21). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:00 PM.
