CHARLESTON, SC - Greenville was limited to only five hits but touched home plate 10 times as the Drive doubled up the Charleston RiverDogs, 10-5, in South Atlantic League action Wednesday afternoon on Splash Day in front of 3,821 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
The Drive plated its first six runs of the game on only one hit.
With the victory, the Drive takes the first two games in this four-game series and improve to 3-3 in the second half (42-32 overall) while the RiverDogs slip to 3-4 in the second half (42-35 overall).
The RiverDogs captured an early 3-0 lead in the second, sending eight batters to the plate, as Abraham Almonte laced an RBI double and was followed with RBI singles by Garrison Lassiter and Jose Pirela.
Greenville added a run in the third when the Drive capitalized on three walks and a wild pitch by Charleston starter Andrew Brackman (1-7) as a sacrifice fly by Jered Stanley plated Jon Hee to make the score 3-1.
The Drive extended their lead to 6-3 in the fourth when Pete Hissey lifted a sacrifice fly to left that drove home Kade Keowen. Will Middlebrooks smashed a grand slam over the left field fence for his third home run of the season.
Charleston cut into Greenville's 6-5 lead in the fifth when Corban Joseph tattooed his third home run of the season, a two-run shot over the left field fence.
Greenville added to its advantage in the eighth when Hee smacked a two-run double and Hissey added a two-run triple.
Drive starter Stolmy Pimentel (7-3) earned the win after he pitched five full stanzas and was charged five earned runs on eight hits and seven strikeouts. Two Greenville relievers, Lance McClain and Armando Zerpa, scattered three hits but no runs as they fanned seven and walked one. Combined, the three Drive pitchers struck out 14 RiverDogs.
Brackman suffered his seventh defeat after he allowed five earned runs while rendering Greenville hitless with eight walks and four strikeouts in 3.2 innings on the mound.
The RiverDogs tallied 11 base hits led by the trio of Pirela, Joseph and Lassiter, who each smacked a pair of knocks while a quintet of Drive bats accounted for all of Greenville's five hits. Middlebrooks had four RBI while Hissey had three and Hee recorded a pair.
Game 3 of this four-game block is set for Thursday at 7:05 p.m. with Greenville sending southpaw Nick Hagadone (0-1, 3.86 ERA) to the hill while Charleston manager Torre Tyson has yet to announce his starting pitcher.
