Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power beat the Lexington Legends 7-5 on Friday night at Appalachian Power Park. West Virginia used a four run fifth inning to break a tie game open and claim the win in the series opener with Lexington.
The Power gained a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Drew Maggi and Andy Vasquez each reached on singles to start the home half of the inning, and each scored when Justin Howard reached on an error.
The Legends evened the score in the third with two runs against West Virginia starter Zack Dodson. Ruben Sosa walked and Emilo King singled prior to a two-out single by Tyler Burnett that tied the game.
West Virginia regained the lead 3-2 in the bottom half of the third inning when Maggi tripled and scored on a ground out by Mel Rojas Jr. Lexington, however, matched the Power run in the top of the fourth on a solo home run to right by Ben Heath.
With the game tied at three, West Virginia plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Maggi walked and scored on a triple by Andy Vasquez, who then scored on a single by Mel Rojas Jr. After Justin Howard walked, Chase Lyles doubled in a Rojas Jr. to knock Legends starter Mike Foltynewicz from the game. Howard later touched home on a sacrifice fly by Dan Grovatt to build a 7-3 lead.
Lexington would a run in the sixth and one in the eighth, but could not complete their third comeback of the night against the Power bullpen.
Zack Dodson did not factor in the decision after pitching four innings, leaving with the score tied at three. Orlando Castro pitched three innings, allowing one run on three hits for his first South Atlantic League win. Foltynewicz (5-11) took the loss, surrendering all seven runs, six earned, on seven hits over four and a third innings pitched. Casey Sadler pitched the final two innings for West Virginia to notch his third save.
Three Power players had multi-hit games, paced by a three hit night for Vasquez, including his 11th triple of the year. The West Virginia utility man surpassed Quincy Latimore's 2009 single-season club record of 10 triples and leads the league by two with nine games remaining.
The Power continue their final homestand of the season on Saturday night against the Legends. Zack Von Rosenberg will get the start for West Virginia against Luis Cruz of Lexington at 7:05 pm.
