Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws (33-27) were dealt a huge loss on Friday night 2-1 by the Hickory Crawdads (35-25). The loss snapped Lakewood's 5 game win streak, and keeps them 2 games out of 1st place in the SAL Northern Division with now 9 games remaining in 2011. It was a close game throughout, and Lakewood had the tying run thrown out at home plate in the 9th inning.
Making a spot start for the BlueClaws, Lendy Castillo did a nice job allowing just 1 run over 4 innings. But, Hickory's starter Ben Henry was a little bit better tossing 7 innings and allowing just 1 unearned run on 3 hits. Ebelin Lugo made his BlueClaws debut and allowed the winning run to score on a Sacrifice Fly in the 5th. He was tagged with the loss.
There was not much offense for either side as the pitching dominated. Hickory had 6 hits, and Lakewood only 5.Jim Murphy had a good game for the BlueClaws reaching base 3 times on 2 walks and a single to lead off the 9th inning. Carlos Perdomo pinch ran for Murphy, was sacrifice bunted to 2B by Zach Collier, and then thrown out at home 9-2-6-2 on a wild play following a single by Anthony Hewitt for the 2nd out of the 9th. Jeff Lanning struck out with Hewitt at 2B to end the game.
There will be no BlueClaws baseball on Saturday or Sunday due to Hurricane Irene. Hickory and Lakewood will play 2 doubleheaders to complete the 5 game series. There will be doubleheaders on both Monday and Tuesday at FirstEnergy Park. The first game will start at 5:05 pm on both Monday and Tuesday, and all the games will be 7 innings in length. The doubleheaders will be the final 4 games of the BlueClaws 2011 season.
